The Mistakes I've Made in the Past Year (So You Can Avoid Them)

Listen on Spotify / Apple Podcasts

Burnout doesn’t just drain your energy—it drains your bank account. And trust me, I learned that the hard way.

In the past year alone, I’ve thrown $10K–$15K at business courses, coaches, and strategies that, in hindsight, I wasn’t even ready for. It wasn’t because they were bad investments—it was because I made them at the wrong time.

I see high achievers make this same mistake over and over again. When we feel stuck, we assume that more = progress. We invest in another course, hire another expert, and overload ourselves with more strategies—without realizing that our real problem is a lack of capacity.

So, before you drop another dime on something you think will solve your business problems, let’s talk about:
Why burnout makes you a terrible decision-maker when it comes to investments
Why more knowledge isn’t always better (if you don’t have space to implement it)
How to know if it’s the right time to invest in your next big move

Let’s break it all down so you don’t waste thousands of dollars like I did.

Throwing Money at the Problem? Been There, Done That.

Think back to the last time you felt stuck in your business or career.
Not just overwhelmed—but truly spinning your wheels.

If you’re like me (or most high achievers), you probably tried to fix it by investing in something.

📌 A new course.
📌 A new coach.
📌 A new strategy.

Because more should equal progress, right? Wrong.

In reality, when you’re already maxed out, adding more just buries you deeper.

I realized this after throwing money at every solution I could find—a sales coach, a LinkedIn course, a speaker training, a systems course, an ads program.

🚨 The result? Almost zero ROI. Not because the programs sucked—but because I wasn’t ready to implement them.

And I see this happen to so many high achievers. We’re sold the idea that success is just one more investment away, but we’re never told how to determine if it’s actually the right time to invest.

Right Thing, Wrong Time: The Cost of Investing Too Soon

The biggest lesson I’ve learned? There’s a difference between the right investment and the right investment at the right time.

💸 The Sales Coach – She was great, but I wasn’t clear enough on my offer or my audience yet to actually benefit from her strategies.
💸 The LinkedIn Course – Super insightful, but I wasn’t even actively using LinkedIn at the time, so it was premature.
💸 The Speaker Training – A fantastic program, but I wasn’t pitching enough speaking gigs to justify the cost.
💸 The Ads & Systems Course – Honestly? I have no idea why I even bought this one.

Each of these could have been valuable—but I didn’t have the bandwidth to implement any of them.

And when that happens, you don’t just lose money. You lose confidence.

🚨 You feel guilty for not using what you paid for.
🚨 You judge yourself for “wasting” money.
🚨 You keep jumping to the next investment, hoping this will be the one that fixes everything.

And that’s how burnout makes us bad decision-makers—we try to buy our way out of the chaos instead of fixing our capacity first.

How to Know If It’s the Right Time to Invest

Before you drop cash on another course, coach, or tool, ask yourself these three questions:

1. Do I actually have the capacity to implement this?

If you can’t commit at least a few focused hours a week to learning and executing, it’s not the right time. Period.

2. Is this solving a problem I’ve already started tackling?

If you haven’t put in the work to figure some of it out yourself, you might still be in the clarity stage—and no course or coach can do that work for you.

3. Will this investment pay off in the next 6 months?

Not every investment has an immediate return—but if it’s something that’s going to sit untouched for months, pause before you buy.

Investing at the Right Time = Real ROI

Burnout isn’t just mental, physical, or emotional. It’s expensive.
It costs you wasted time, wasted energy, and wasted money.

But here’s the good news: Now that you know this, you don’t have to keep making the same mistakes.

Before you invest in your next big move, ask yourself if it’s actually the right time.

And if you know that what you really need is more structure, more systems, and more capacity first—that’s where I come in.
