Les Mills Pump & Combat Hybrid

Started: January 2015

Completed: March 2015

I set a goal in 2015 of fully completing 3 new Beachbody programs! That's a pretty easy feat when you look at the length of these programs, but some of these programs were definitely a bit outside of my comfort zone...especially this one!

The Les Mills Pump-Combat Hybrid program...

Now...I am not a weight lifter! I've never been a weight lifter! There's a part of me that always wanted to try it, but I always was massively uncomfortable in a weight room. I just didn't know what to do! And I didn't want to get in the way of everyone else that did! So, I abstained from doing any real weight lifting because of that! Les Mills Pump gave me that in the comfort of my own home!  Les Mills Pump originated from the Les Mills Body Pump program, which is a program that emphasizes lean muscle, developed through high reps and low to moderate weights. As described on the Les Mills website..

BODYPUMP is for anyone looking to get lean, toned and fit – fast. Using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, BODYPUMP gives you a total body workout. It will burn up to 590 calories*. Instructors will coach you through the scientifically proven moves and techniques pumping out encouragement, motivation and great music – helping you achieve much more than on your own!

It's the perfect intro-to-weight-lifting class for people like me that have always been intimidated by it!

Similarly, I have never been into martial arts! I had a roommate in college who was big into Tae Kwon Do. I'm pretty sure she even invited me to a class once or twice, and I never took her up on it. Call it fear! It probably was! I didn't like the idea of doing something in front of everyone else that I wasn't good at! It's something I'm still working on -- struggling with that fear of failure. But that's a story for a different day. When my friend gave me her extra copy of Les Mills Combat...I was hesitant. But I figured I'd give it a try. I immediately loved it! It was a blast, a distraction, and a GREAT cardio workout. I'm officially a martial arts convert! Les Mills Combat, like Pump, originated from the Les Mills BodyCombat class, which, as described on the Les Mills website is described as follows...

BODYCOMBAT is a high-energy martial arts-inspired workout that is totally non-contact. Punch and kick your way to fitness and burn up to 740 calories* in a class. No experience needed. Learn moves from Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Muay Thai, Capoeira and Kung Fu. Release stress, have a blast and feel like a champ. Bring your best fighter attitude and leave inhibitions at the door.

After 90 days of alternating Les Mills Pump and Les Mills Combat...I am feeling fantastic!! I'm excited to report on how I felt about the program! There were definitely a couple dislikes...but also TONS of likes! So, let's get started on the review...

The program lengths...

I loved these programs, but what I didn't love was the fact that for the entire last month the workouts were 60 minutes long! Now, I was determined to finish this program, so I made it work, but there were definitely days where it was a struggle to get it done! I get my workout done first thing in the morning when nothing else can distract me. I already had been waking up at 5:30AM to get my workout done at 6...and with these long workouts I had to get up 30 minutes earlier! It was a struggle! I'm not going to lie! And that is probably my biggest dislike about this combo-program!

There's not a lot of down time...

In most of these longer format programs that are 60 or 90 days, there's some sort of down time in the program. Like 3 weeks on with 1 week "off," or lightened up. This program seemingly didn't have that. The "off" weeks were weeks where you still had a lot of plyometric training. I would've liked to see maybe them incorporate in some of the lighter, shorter workouts and some more Yoga.

So damn FUN!!

I really don't know how else to say this other than to shout from the rooftops that this combo program was SO DAMN FUN! I literally had so much freaking fun in Combat--punching and kicking my way to a more sculpted frame, pretending that I was even slighting intimidating! And the trainers in these programs just make things really enjoyable! Dan and Rachel in Les Mills Combat are quite the duo, and I'm really a fan of Lissa an her enthusiasm. The whole Les Mills Pump gang was awesome (though I have to admit that I had my favorites...hey hey Joel!)...admittedly they were a bit cheesy at times but they just made the process of waking up at the crack of dawn to workout that much more enjoyable! If these selfies are proof of anything, it's that I always felt more energized and ready to tackle my day!

Just like that picture says above - Jabs equal ABS! I'm a massive fan of Les Mills Combat and if I learned anything while I was doing that program it's just how much core work you can get just from punching! Combat 60? Hello! 60 minutes of awesome cardio and when you really focus on your form...you REALLY feel those abs at the end! Seriously...if you want a toned up mid section without having to do a ton of crunches, you should totally check out Les Mills Combat! AndBONUS, this is a great way to get an awesome workout that is pretty low-impact. Just sayin'!

I told you how Les Mills Combat can tone your abs with all that punching. Now, I'm going to tell you how much I loved the results I saw in my back and my biceps thanks to these programs! I definitely think that part of this had to do with Combat, of course, especially the back. But, speaking as someone who has never felt like they had a strong upper body...I have never in my life felt like I have bicep muscle and now I do! Even my triceps got a ton of love! Basically, I got absurd upper body definition that I wasn't prepared for doing these programs! It's arm definition that I can see, and that I can feel and I'm SO freaking tank top ready I can't even begin to tell you!

That's probably been my absolute favorite part of this program! The music in the program is amazing! Pump up, energetic, motivational....to the point where I found myself downloading songs after workouts! These songs, like "It's Not My Time" By: 3 Doors Down, became my anthem! These songs synchronized the workout to the music--each squat to each beat! It was amazing! I'm a music junkie so this has been and will continue to be my favorite little additive to the Les Mills Pump-Combat hybrid program!

I highly suggest you try out these programs!! But, unfortunately, they're phasing them out because the partnership between Beachbody and Les Mills has ended and Pump is no longer available, but LES MILLS COMBAT IS WHILE SUPPLIES LAST. It's seriously so freaking fun! And ON SALE! You can find that challenge pack and that program here! I totally suggest you check it out! It's so fun and so worth your time!

If you're looking for...

  • Great cardio!! We're talking 500+ calories in a single 50 minute workout!!
  • Great MUSIC!
  • Kick butt, energetic trainers...
  • A workout that tones, trims, and is so fun that it distracts you from your workout...

I highly suggest you check out Les Mills Combat! It's a blast and it will totally kick your butt!

Until next time, keep working hard!
