In 2016, Dove did a Study on Confidence in Women...

The results of this study were absolutely mind-blowing.

From the perspective of self-image...

  • Just 4% of women worldwide consider themselves “beautiful”.

  • Over half of women agree that they’re their own worst beauty critic.

  • By the time girls reach the age of 17, 78% will be “unhappy with their bodies.”

  • 47% of girls aged 11-14 refuse to take part in activities that might show their bodies in any way.

In our careers and at work:

  • Confidence actually declines with experience

    • 27% of new women employees are confident they can reach top management

    • This declines to 13% in experienced women employees.

  • 67% of women said they needed more support building confidence to feel like they can be leaders, according to a KPMG Women’s Leadership study,

  • Women weren't confident enough to: request a new role or position (56%), request a raise (61%), ask for a promotion (65%), or pursue a job opportunity beyond their experience (73%)

  • HP once found that female employees would not apply to a job unless they believed they met 100% of the job qualifications, compared to men who only needed to meet 60% of qualifications

Basically, here's the gist. Anybody, particularly women, who has ever tried to do anything in their life knows that a lack of confidence, self-doubt, etc. holds us back so much for really showing up for what we want. In grad school, even though everything about applying to graduate school showed me that I deserve it, that I am intelligent enough to be there, etc., I felt like a fricken imposter and like I was going to be found out. That I didn't belong and each test I took or presentation I gave would reveal that I didn't belong here. As a coach, for my first few years, I just never felt like I was enough. That I wasn't going to be a good enough coach, wouldn't be able to help, etc. Friends, confidence hinders us! We know this!
