Starting a business felt like the ultimate antidote to burnout. I thought that by working for myself, setting my own hours, and doing work I was passionate about, I could finally escape the relentless pressure that had worn me down in previous roles. But here’s the truth: burnout doesn’t disappear just because you’re your own boss.

In fact, without the right mindset, being a solopreneur can make burnout even more insidious.

The reality is this: running your own business can be overwhelming. You wear all the hats and make all the decisions, and the lines between work and life blur in ways that can leave you feeling constantly "on." The hustle culture tells us to keep pushing and keep grinding and that our worth is tied to our productivity.

But as I—and maybe even you—learned the hard way, that’s a surefire path to burnout.

Here are five mindset shifts that helped me break free from the cycle of burnout as a female solopreneur and that can help you do the same.

1. Your To-Do List Is a Tool, Not a Judge

As solopreneurs, our to-do lists can feel like they rule our lives. I used to think that the longer my list, the more I needed to accomplish to prove I was working hard enough. But here’s the thing: your to-do list is a tool—a convenient place to collect potential activities—not the judge and jury of whether you’re doing enough.

Shifting this mindset allows you to see your to-do list for what it truly is: a collection of options. It’s a guide, not a mandate. The value of your day isn’t determined by how many tasks you check off, but by the impact and alignment of the work you do. Prioritize what matters, and let go of the rest.

2. Your Opinion Is the Most Important One

Comparison is the thief of joy. We know this! And in business, it’s also a one-way ticket to burnout. I’ve learned that the only opinion that truly matters in my business is my own. It’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing—how fast they’re growing, how polished their brand looks—but comparing your journey to someone else’s will only lead to frustration and self-doubt.

Instead, focus on your vision, your values, and your goals. What works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay. Trust your intuition, and let your unique strengths guide your decisions. Your business should reflect who you are, not who you think you should be based on someone else’s highlight reel.

3. Align Your Day with Your Values

When I started aligning my day—and my business—with my values, everything changed! Instead of just chasing tasks and deadlines, I began to ask myself: Does this align with what I truly value? If the answer was no, it was a clear sign that I needed to rethink my priorities.

Your values are your compass. They keep you grounded and focused on what truly matters. When your daily actions are aligned with your values, you’ll find more fulfillment in your work and less stress in your life. This alignment is key to creating a sustainable business that doesn’t drain you but energizes and motivates you.

4. You Are Both the Cause and the Cure

One of the hardest truths I’ve had to accept is that I am both the cause and the cure of my burnout. I know that’s hard to hear and it immediately puts some people on the defensive, but it’s true. It’s easy to blame external factors—clients, deadlines, market conditions—but ultimately, how we manage our workload, set our boundaries, and prioritize our well-being is within our control. I mean, I talked to a gal recently who was in her 3rd trimester of her first pregnancy and what did she do? She did a re-brand in her business…

That’s a textbook example of how some of us operate!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Burnout is a choice—not that we want to be burned out, but burnout is a result of our choices. And I love this mindset because…it is empowering because it means you can change your circumstances. By recognizing your role in your own burnout, you can start making changes—big and small—that will protect your energy and well-being. Whether it’s setting stricter boundaries, outsourcing tasks, or simply giving yourself permission to rest, the solution starts with you.

5. Progress Over Perfection

Perfectionism is a sneaky form of self-sabotage that can lead to burnout faster than almost anything else. I used to believe that everything in my business had to be perfect—that if it wasn’t, I was failing. But striving for perfection is exhausting and unsustainable.

Instead, I’ve learned—or I’m in the process of learning because I’m imperfect with it—to embrace progress over perfection. Taking imperfect action is better than taking no action at all. Your business will evolve, and so will you. The key is to keep moving forward, learning, and growing, rather than getting stuck in the endless loop of trying to make everything perfect.

Burnout isn’t an inevitable part of being a solopreneur. It’s a signal that something needs to change, and often, that change starts with our mindset. By shifting how you view your work, your worth, and your well-being, you can create a business that supports you, rather than drains you.
